Neural Blueprints Allow Soft Robots to Adapt Instantly to Changing Environments

Post

MIT researchers develop a generalized AI control system that grants flexible, bio-inspired robots human-like physical intuition.

Soft robotics, which utilize flexible materials to safely interact with humans and delicate objects, have historically been difficult to control due to their unpredictable physics. Engineers recently unveiled a groundbreaking AI control system that acts as a "neural blueprint" for soft robotic limbs. Instead of retraining the robot for every new task, the AI enables the machine to learn a broad set of basic motions and dynamically adapt to new weights, wind resistance, or structural damage in real-time. This leap in autonomous adaptation makes soft robots viable for complex, unpredictable tasks in elderly care, warehouse logistics, and search-and-rescue.
